O-Week 2009
Let's welcome in a new year of go playing fun! Hello to our club members, and to all the new students, we welcome you to Students Playing Go and to Orientation week, better known as O-week.
Clubs and Societies O-Week takes place on 26th and 27th Feb 12-4pm. This is your chance to take a peek at some of the awesome activities and clubs around campus. Students Playing Go will be there (look for the black and white banner and lots of smiling faces!), and everyone is encouraged to come along.
We'll be giving you an introduction to the game of Go with presentations and quick lessons, and our friendly committee members will be happy to play games and to teach. So don't be shy, just come say hello!
Registration for membership to the club will be available on both days and opened for the first few weeks. If you wish to sign up or have any questions, feel free to contact us or come see us at any of our bi-weekly meetings. To our members from last year, please remember you'll have to re-register for this year!
Membership to the club is per year and will entitled you to our meetings, events and tournaments as well as discounts with our sponsors for go equipment and books.
This year the membership fee will be as follow:-
Union members $2.50
Non Union members $5
Non Uni-melb members $8
This semester our twice-a-week meetings start the week after Orientation, on Monday 2nd March. Details are:-
Monday: Alice Hoy Building, room 325, 1-3pm
Friday: Alice Hoy Building, room 323 , 1-3pm
There'll be other events going on, so make sure you'll be kept updated by joining our mailing list and keeping an an eye on this site!
Joining a club is a great way to meet friends and SPGO is a prime example! You get to learn something new, be social, meet people and have a chance to become involved in university life!
So come along and see us during O-week!
A brief update on what we did last year:-
Beginners' Night was splendid, happy to see all the new people! We'll have another Beginners' Night around the third week this semester, so be alert!
Both our annual Games Night (which is held in conjunction with other clubs) and SPGO Tournament were highly successful. It's definitely nice to see some of our newer members entering the tournament and having fun.
SPGO went along to the Melbourne Anime Festival (as we have done for the past four years as part of cultural events), bringing anime fans closer to the game of Go (as shown through Hikaru no Go and various other movies).
Early in the summer break we had the chance to be visited by a chinese professional go player, Wu Shu Hao 3dan, who spent a day talking to our members and playing games. A definite highlight included our simultaneous games with Shu Hao.
See you all again this year =)
cheers
Shamim
